Legal Help in Loss Mitigation

Say you receive a loan modification offer from your lender and they write off some of the oan payments. Is that taxable?

What if the lender approves a short sale but the written approval is silent on whether or not they'll pursue a deficiency judgment in, say, five years when you're back on your feet?

These are just two examples. I can't, don't and shouldn't provide legal or tax advice, but people need it in many instances. I know it's grating to think about paying a lawyer or an accountant when a person is in foinancial distress, but for the amount of money involved in these kinds of transactions, a few hundred to a professional is cheap.

That's why this site uses an attorney and an accountant and will refer you. If you dont wan't them, I'll whine until you get your own.

The last thing you want to do is think you've closed the book on a bad part of your life, only to find out you haven't down the road.
